About the Presentation: Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement:
This presentation is designed to assist law enforcement professionals with:
- the development of behavioral strategies
- inoculate against loss of idealism and inappropriate behavior patterns, and
- review the short and long-term effects on both the personal and professional aspects of their lives.
The course will discuss how:
- the initial enthusiasm and desire to professionally contribute can be transformed into negative cynicism, social distrust, and hostility to the world at large that significantly impacts the professionals work performance, decision-making and ultimately over-all quality of life.
Former DC White will also review the impact on the children of law enforcement families in terms of school functioning and health.
The goal of the course is to have the law enforcement professional review the potential impact the career causes in the personal life and to develop strategies for overall emotional survival. The strategies are designed to permit the professional to continue functioning effectively and ethically without “burning-out” and without resorting to emotional isolation from friends and colleagues. The goal of the course is to provide information that lets agencies keep officers committed and engaged in productive police work.
The course addresses:
- the dynamics that can transform within a matter of a few years idealistic and committed officers/employees into cynical, angry individuals who begin having difficulties in both the personal and professional aspects of their lives.
- the issues that can potentially see officers engaging in inappropriate behavior patterns and decision-making that leads to difficulties.
This course is presented at all FBI LEEDS and Executive Development Institutes at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

*This event is open to all OPS members including one support person/spouse/partner
OPS support contact (Blue Buddy).
What is Blue Buddy? It’s a way for you to identify who your trusted support is within the organization.
Why do I need to add this information? Support happens informally and is built on trust. Should the need arise to provide support, who better to help you than a trusted peer? Identifying your Blue Buddy allows the Wellness Team to provide support to those who support you. It’s one more way to assist members who may be dealing with issues that arise from various work/life stressors.
Who has access to this information? Only the three Wellness Sergeants and the Resource Liaison can access to the information you provide. Confidentiality is paramount when it comes to member wellness. This information will not be shared and will only be used to assist members.
How would I add this information? The information is updated on your staff profile, similar to how you would update your parking information or home address on the Intranet. This information can be updated at any time.

Blue Line – The podcast
Blue Line is Canada’s national law enforcement magazine/podcast. From its inception in 1989 with a circulation of 1,500, Blue Line has now grown to a per issue circulation of more than 8,000. Total readership of each issue, including pass along, is around 64,500.
Blue Line, Canada’s only independent law enforcement magazine, has no leaning toward management nor unions and no political preferences. This unbiased approach is why Blue Line is read by the full spectrum of the law enforcement community, from executive management to frontline personnel. Our readers include police chiefs, customs officers, military, local, municipal, provincial and Indigenous police, federal and provincial corrections officers, RCMP and many more. Our in-house staff and guest writers work hard to keep readers on the leading edge of information, whether it be case law, training issues or technology trends.
CIPSRT partners with clinicians to answer some tough questions about the opioid crisis
The opioid crisis continues to grow in Canada. The recent COVID-19 pandemic is reported to have exacerbated an already difficult situation. Public Safety Personnel (PSP) are on the frontline responding to the crisis. The Canadian Institute of Public Safety Research and Treatment (CIPSRT) has partnered with clinicians from the Wayfound Mental Health group to answer PSP questions about how the opioid crisis impacts their mental health in the video “Ask a clinician: How can PSP deal with the opioid crisis?”
Driven by conversations with PSP, CIPSRT realized that many PSP struggle with the mental health impact of opioid-related calls. PSP – facing an increasing number of calls, repeat calls, or calls involving children – reported the opioid crisis is straining their mental health.
We heard questions like:
- What do we do with a patient that is mad at us for ruining their high?
- How do we deal with seeing kids of the drug user running around uncared for?
- How do we stop feeling helpless? It seems like no matter how many times we save this patient, we’ll be back tomorrow or the next week to save this patient again.
Regina Firefighter Todd Frei and Ottawa Paramedic Francois Lalonde pose these questions, and others, to clinicians from the Wayfound Mental Health group including CIPSRT’s Clinical subcommittee chair Dr. Megan McElheran.
